Chapter seven

Maxlond

When I spoke to Kamiyah the other day, I didn’t think she would move as fast as she did to help me. Often times people said shit just to say it but didn’t really mean it. I quickly found out that Kamiyah definitely wasn’t one of those people.

“I am so sorry to hear about your dad,” she said when she found out that my dad was killed. The story was all over the news, so I had to admit to her that it was my dad.

She was extremely supportive and rushed right over to be with me.

“That shit is hard,” I admitted.

“I can’t even imagine what you and your siblings are going through right now. Do they know who did it?”

“Nah. Look, I’m glad you’re here because I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“What is it?”

“I need to move me and my siblings up outta here. Do you know someone who can help us find a place?” I asked.

“Are you sure you’re ready to move out of your uncle’s spot? I mean, y’all so young…”

“Young in age Kamiyah! I’m a grown ass man!” I declared taking offense to her implying that I needed my uncle to take care of us.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that…”

“It’s cool. Just know that I am grown. I don’t need nobody taking care of me and my siblings like some charity case. That nigga may be our blood but he ain’t shit! All he doing is looking out for self! He wants us to stay here so he can reap the benefits from the social security office! We don’t need that kinda help!”

“Wow! Well, I have a cousin who’s a realtor. I can give him a call,” she said.

“That would be great!” I said.

“Are you looking to rent an apartment?”

“I’m actually looking to rent a house for right now. If I could find one with a six- month lease so we can move in as soon as possible…”

“Maxlond did you forget you aren’t working?” she asked.

“No.”

“So, how are you gonna be able to afford the rent if you aren’t working?”

“Did I not just tell you that I’m a grown man? I think you’re still looking at me as a little kid and if that’s the case, this ain’t gonna work!”

I was getting a little fed up with her treating me like a child. The only way she’d probably take me seriously as a man was if I gave her something to convince her of it.

“Who’s at your crib?” I asked.

“Nobody! You know I live by myself,” she said.

“Let’s go to your place then.”

“Why?”

“Because I said so. Lemme go tell my brother we leaving, so he can keep an eye on my sister. I’ll be right back,” I said.

“Max…”

“Gimme one minute.”

I walked in the house and to the bedroom. “Aye, can you keep an eye on Arielle? I got something I need to handle real quick.”

“Yea, of course.”

“Also, don’t leave the funds unattended. I’m working on something to get us outta here,” I said.
